Being A Disabled Advocate & Pushing Past Paralysis

I was asked a question recently that I couldn’t give a short answer to, so I thought I’d vlog and blog about. The question was basically:

“Are you really disabled and how do you know the statistics when I have to search your page and still can’t find what your disability actually is?”

The answer is quite simple: I’m not defined by disability but that doesn’t mean I can’t advocate for those of us who have them AND, simultaneously, teach others how to push past paralysis themselves by living that way myself. The idea that I have to shout from the rooftops and identify with my disability is ridiculous. My username almost everywhere is “Push Past Paralysis”, you’d think that’d be enough. I guess not.

As far as how I advocate, it’s pretty simple. If you approach the world or people as if they are against you, you won’t get anywhere close to your mission being completed. That’s projection coming from YOU. Ask to sit down, converse, come to the table with facts, insight & drive. See how things unfold from that approach. You’d be surprised.

I have even more upsetting news for this person and any others who think like him. I live even LESS consumed by my disability in real life. The only reason I even address it online is because I like to connect with people and hope to help those struggling in any way with their own “paralysis” (whether in mind, body or spirit) with my story.

Granted, this person was kind of whacky and proceeded to demand information about my disability from my friends after I’d blocked him. Had he asked in a nice way and wasn’t so aggressive about it, we could have had a dialogue. Like I said, I did want to address the question for anyone else wondering for themselves, which is exactly why I’m posting this blog and why I made a YouTube video.

I hope you enjoy it and will subscribe to my channel for many similar videos!
